Controversial newspaper columnist Katie Hopkins is set to address students at the University of Kent next month. Her participation at a debate on citizenship and human rights at the University of Exeter last week drew widespread protests and a petition from staff calling for her invitation to be withdrawn. The Liberty Union has a history of hosting controversial speakers on university campus, including prominent YouTuber Carl Benjamin, who has criticised feminism, Islam and political correctness. The event will need to be approved by both the university and Kent Union before being given the final go-ahead.
The announcement came after protesters gathered outside an event where Ms Hopkins was due to speak in Lewes, causing it to be cancelled on safety grounds. A previous motion to cancel the event because of expected demonstrations and tensions was defeated, with Ms Hopkins later claiming audience members and security staff had been attacked. She also headed a programme on LBC Radio, which was ended — also apparently by mutual consent — in May. You can find our Community Guidelines in full here.
